College Drop Off - Day 2 - Memories

Aug 20,

This morning my brother in law sent us this picture. It is from 15 years ago, when Sofia was the flower girl at their wedding. It is mind blowing how quickly time goes by. One day you have a cute little 3 year old, and then you blink and next thing you know, you are taking her to college.

College Drop Off - Day 2 - Morning Run

Aug 20,

This morning Lionel and I went running to workout and to check out the campus and the dorm one more time, before the craziness of tomorrow. It was already starting to get somewhat hot, but it was not too bad just yet. And I enjoyed seeing the campus now, during the summer, since the last time we came it was December and cold. It was also very peaceful, since it was the morning and nobody was moving in today. It was like we had the whole place to ourselves.

College Drop Off - Day 1 - Arriving in Denver

Aug 19,

This morning we left the house at about 7:30am to catch our flight to Denver. At the airport, while walking by the gift shops, I asked Sofia if she wanted me to buy her a stuffed lobster, to remember "home" and surprisingly she said yes. That made me happy, as I want to believe that means that in the last few weeks she has developed at least a tiny bit of affection for Boston. After all, this is where we live now and will be home during school breaks.

When we landed in Denver we got the rental car, got lunch, checked in at the hotel, and headed to target - which was full of many other students and their parents. We got a bunch of essential stuff she will need for her dorm, and then went out for dinner. By then the weather had turned pretty stormy in some areas, and the sky looked kind of creepy. But we also saw a double rainbow and you could actually see the entire arch, which was quite special. At that moment I wanted to believe that the rainbow was smiling at us, and welcoming Sofia to Colorado with all its happy colors.

Last night in Boston

Aug 18,

Tonight was Sofia's last night in Boston, and we went out for dinner to a restaurant by Harvard Square. It was so very strange to know that it was her last time "home" in a while. We tried not to think too much about it, but it was hard.

Special lunch

Aug 14,

Today was a special day as Sofia came to have lunch with me - the last opportunity before going to college. She asked me if I was free for lunch and I wasn't, because I had meetings right before and after lunch time, but of course I moved those meetings out of the way and said yes. We had a hot sunny day, and walked towards the Institute of Contemporary Art, or ICA. We meant to have lunch at Sweet Greens, a salad place, but had trouble finding it and instead ended up at Shake Shack. But afterward we still walked to ICA so I could show her the nice view. She doesn't love taking photos but I insisted, so that I can really remember our special lunch date.

Kayaking

Aug 13,

This afternoon Sofia and I went kayaking at the Charles River. Lionel and Bella were invited, but Lionel was too tired from playing soccer in the morning and Bella wasn’t feeling the best and wanted to rest. Besides, she had a four hour soccer camp in the evening. So Sofia and I went by ourselves. The rental place is about a 5 min drive from our house, and we had seen it passing by.

We kayaked for an hour and a half, which was about the right length of time for us. It was nice being out in the water, but it was definitely also hard work. I am sure tomorrow I’ll be sore. It was worth it though, to stay active, enjoy the outdoors, and spend time with my Sofia. We have less than 1 week before we have to take her to college, so I am enjoying every moment I can with her.

Tennis

Aug 12,

This evening Sofia and I went to play tennis to Newton North, Bella’s future high school. It was actually fairly crowded, but luckily there was one court left. We had good weather, meaning it was warm, and I appreciated the combination of weather, tennis, and time with my Sofia.
