Mexico 2021 - Day 5 - Transition Day

 Jun 29,

Today was a transition day. We left Queretaro to drive to San Miguel de Allende. But before we left, and while others watched a soccer game, Sofia and I walked around and bought a few gifts. I also bought my new pijama t-shirt at a cheap clothing store. I thought it was funny. Since the sun came out, the kids squeezed in a little bit of pool time. Then Lionel, Sofia, Raj, and Gabi went to pick up the rental cars. Sounds like the rental process was an adventure in itself, but we finally made it out of the city and arrived in San Miguel de Allende without any issues. We didn't make a single wrong turn. We are staying at the house of one of Gabi's High School friends. He kindly offered it to us once we knew we were coming here. He used to rent it it Airbnb, but took it down because of Covid.

We got here in the evening, and the weather was stormy, so all we did was unpack, go out for dinner, and go to the grocery store to buy breakfast food for the week. I love going to grocery stores when I travel. Nothing like checking out the local food.

Mexico - Day 4 - El Centro

 Jun 28,

Today we stayed downtown. We walked around checking out the churches including San Agustin, the church where Lionel and I got married almost 20 years ago - it will be 20 years on Aug 18. There are a lot of churches downtown. We went inside San Agustin, but you couldn't really sit down. It was cordoned off likely because of the pandemic. We also did a little bit of shopping for knick knacks, and came back to the hotel because Lionel, Raj, and the kids wanted to watch soccer. France was playing. That took a while. In the meantime, Sofia and I were chilling in our room. After that we went back out. It was raining, but we grabbed our ponchos and umbrella and headed out. We had dinner at a really good restaurant - a different type of Mexican cuisine - and then walked back. On our way back we also stopped by several shops, and took a few extra pictures. The city is also so beautiful at night. It reminds me of why I always loved it so much and why - if I had stayed in Mexico - I would have definitely stayed right here.

Mexico - Day 3 - Around Town

 Jun 27,

This morning we had breakfast at the hotel and Gabi's high school friend Oscar stopped by to say hi and drop off the keys to his house - since he is kindly letting us stay there when we are in San Miguel. I am not exaggerating when I say that it had been at least 20 years since the last time I saw him. He stopped by with his girlfriend and her kids. They had a long drive ahead of them, so they did not stay long,

After breakfast we went to the Mercado de la Cruz, to walk around and check it out. We had nieve, some fruit, and bought some fruit to go. Our friends then picked us up from there and hung out with us all afternoon. We went to the Cerro de las Campanas and to visit our old University. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, they did not let us in. So we just saw it from the outside. It is definitely much bigger now. And the surrounding area, which used to be just open space, is now completely developed.

We then drove around the city, and had an early dinner at a place that used to be a factory and  is now a brewery. By then it was past 7:00 pm. We came back to the hotel to rest, and our friends went back home to get ready for the week. We didn't say good bye quite yet though, as we will see them again before we go back home.
